I wish to write things again. This place hath been empty for far too long. I’ve grown a bit uncomfortable with the idea of mixing political opinions with programming commentary / games / space things. Perhaps I should start a second blog? Well, maybe not. So, in trying to rewrite DFLangCreate in a language I can actually work on, I had run into a few issues: I don’t have a compiler for the original language. I don’t know the orignal language. I can’t run the original .exe in a debugger. I don’t know what exactly the original procedures are outputting, only the overall program. So, while I had both the original version and later a decompiled C# version of it to go by for my line-by-line translation, I had no direct way to verify how true to the original I was being.

So, there’s this little modding tool for Dwarf Fortress called DFLangCreate. You just hand it a couple of ‘example’ words, and it’ll generate an entire language’ dictionary (for Dwarf Fortress, at least) that is ‘like’ the samples. Or at least, looks like a real language superficially, to an English speaker ;) It hasn’t been updated since 2012, tho the author’d talked about rewriting it in Java.
